I've been fortunate to play some of the very best courses in the US including several that have appeared on the PGA tour at one time or another. For me, only Pebble Beach ranks above the Prince Course in Kauai.
The Prince is an architectural gem, an inspired routing of golfing challenges masterfully woven into the gradual rises and falls of Kauai's lush sea cliff terrain, that requires reasonable driving length, accurate iron play, and a practiced short game to be fully enjoyed. The course is impeccably groomed and presented, hardly a blade of its new Seashore Paspalum out of place, and even with a spectacular daily tariff, a "must play" for passionate (vacationing) golfers. Having had the good fortune to play most of the state's courses, including private ones, I'd say The Prince stands alone in my experience, without peer, simply the best.
The Prince was one of my all time favorite courses. To hear it's closed and going private is VERY upsetting. I hope this fails as a business so that maybe it can reopen as a public course.
The course itself was in mint condition and the staff at the club were superb in terms of efficiency and friendliness. The range and other warm up facilities were wonderful and the course was made up of some breathtaking holes. Overall this made for an incredible golfing experience. $200 + is never cheap for a round of golf but given its ranking in the top 100 US courses this really is value for money compared with most of the others on the list.
